Canada Passport Photo — 50×70 mm

Canada uses the largest passport photo in common circulation — 50×70 mm, not the global 35×45 — with a head band of 31 to 36 mm and a paper-application custom all its own: the photographer's details on the back. This page measures your geometry and background for free and explains where a home print fits.

How it works

  1. Drop a straight-on photo against a plain white or light-coloured wall.
  2. Set the crown line; the checker measures against the 31–36 mm band.
  3. Review the verdicts, then export at 50×70 mm print geometry.
  4. For paper applications, read the note about commercial photographers first.

Worth knowing

The Canadian frame is half again the area of a 35×45: 50 mm wide, 70 mm tall, with the head measuring 31–36 mm from chin to crown. All the familiar ICAO furniture applies — neutral expression, even lighting, plain white or light-coloured background, no shadows on face or backdrop — but crops made for other countries cannot be recycled; the aspect ratio itself is different, and a 35×45 blown up to 50×70 puts the head badly out of band.

Canada's distinctive rule is procedural rather than optical. For paper applications, photos are expected to come from a commercial photographer or studio, with the studio's name and address and the date printed or stamped on the back, and one photo certified by your guarantor for some application types. A geometrically perfect home print can be refused at intake on that basis alone. The realistic use of this page for a paper file is verification — measure your studio photo before you build the application around it.

The digital channels are where self-produced photos have room: Canada's online renewal pathways accept uploaded photos, with the program's own specifications shown in the application flow. Check the stream you qualify for, and if it takes uploads, the export here gives you the correct 5:7 geometry at print resolution to submit or to have printed.

Background language in the Canadian spec is more permissive than India's — plain white or light-coloured — but the uniformity requirement does the real work. The ΔE evenness check catches the gradient from a window off to one side, which is the most common flaw in Canadian home attempts precisely because the big frame includes more wall.

Canada's 50×70 mm format has 2.2× the area of the standard 35×45 mm photo — which is why re-cropping a European passport photo for a Canadian application reliably fails: the head lands out of band in a frame that shows twice the background.

Verify it yourself: open your browser's DevTools, switch to the Network tab, and use this tool — you will see no upload request. Or load the page, go offline, and it still works.

What this tool will not do

  • It will not satisfy the paper-application requirement for photographer information on the back of the print — that is procedural, not optical.
  • It cannot decide whether your renewal stream accepts uploaded photos; the application flow states its own rules and they differ by program.

Questions people ask

What size is a Canadian passport photo?

50 mm wide by 70 mm tall — larger than the 35×45 mm used across most of the world, with the head between 31 and 36 mm. The two formats are not interchangeable by cropping.

Can I take my own Canadian passport photo?

For paper applications the expectation is a commercial photographer, with their details on the back of the print. Online streams that accept uploads are the self-service route — check which stream your renewal qualifies for.

Why do Canadian photos need studio information on the back?

It is a fraud-control measure of the Canadian process: the stamp attests where and when the photo was taken. Missing information is grounds for intake refusal regardless of image quality.

Is the background white or grey for Canada?

Plain white or light-coloured, evenly lit. The evenness matters as much as the shade — the larger frame shows more wall, so gradients that hide in a 35×45 are visible here.

Can this page's export be printed at a pharmacy kiosk?

Yes — pair it with the print-sheet tool to tile 50×70 mm copies with cut marks onto a 4×6 sheet, and print on photo paper. For paper applications, remember the back-of-photo requirement still applies.
