Change the Background Colour of a Photo

Changing a background color is really two operations: separating the subject, then compositing it over a flat fill. The separation step reuses the same in-browser matting engine as the background remover, so the quality of the cut is identical - what this tool adds is the compositing step, exact color control and sensible export defaults for the documents and listings people actually need.

Exact color values matter here in a way they rarely do elsewhere in photo editing. Amazon's style guide calls for main images on pure white - RGB 255,255,255 - not cream, not pale grey, not a white wall photographed in warm light. A backdrop that merely looks white in your kitchen will read as off-white next to competitors' listings and can get an image flagged. Compositing onto a digital fill sidesteps the problem entirely, because the background is mathematically uniform.

ID and visa photographs are the other big use case. Different countries specify different backdrop colors - plain white or off-white is the most common requirement, while some applications ask for light blue or red - and a solid digital replacement is far more uniform than anything you can photograph against a bedsheet. One practical tip: match your export format to the destination. JPEG is what listing platforms and application portals expect, and a flat background compresses extremely well. Choose PNG only when you need lossless quality or plan further editing, since JPEG compression can introduce faint ripples where a sharp subject edge meets a perfectly flat fill.
