Clean and Resize a Signature

The cleanup here is a threshold operation in luminance: pixels brighter than your cutoff become pure white, killing paper texture and phone-shadow greys, while darker pixels are pushed toward solid ink. The slider matters because pens differ — a fine ballpoint needs a higher cutoff than a bold gel pen, and one setting never suits both. You watch the result live and stop when the loops are closed and the background is empty.

Portals pair signature uploads with the same mechanical validation as photos, at smaller windows: the recurring pattern is 140×60 pixels inside 10–20 KB, with UPSC-style boards accepting larger squares. Small windows are less forgiving than they look — at 140×60 there are only 8,400 pixels to spend, so a signature photographed at an angle wastes them on empty paper. Crop tight to the ink before dropping the file, or sign larger next time; big originals shrink beautifully, small ones do not enlarge.

What separates an accepted signature from a bounced one is usually contrast discipline rather than pen artistry. Verification staff and matching software both want unambiguous dark-on-white; faded ink, pencil, and coloured gel pens introduce doubt. Blue or black ink on white, cleaned to a hard threshold, is the entire recipe.

A procedural tip that saves grief: some boards ask you to sign inside a drawn box on paper, photograph the box, and upload the box contents. Read your notification for that detail before signing on a blank page — the geometry requirements occasionally include the box lines themselves.
